PTA MEETING MINUTES

School Governance

At PS 11, family members have many opportunities to actively engage in the school’s governance and operations.

The Parent Teacher Association cultivates an enriching environment for students through engagement and fundraising. The School Leadership Team unites families and staff to focus on implementing the DOE Comprehensive Education Plan.

If you would like to reach the parent leadership, please email the PTA at pta@ps11bk.org or the SLT at slt@ps11bk.org. Please also feel free to leave a note in the PTA or SLT mailboxes in the PS11 main office.

Parent Teacher Association

The Parent Teacher Association has the explicit goals of enriching the experience of all students.

NYC Department of Education mandates that each school have a Parent Teacher Association. All parents, step-parents, legally appointed guardians, foster parents and persons in parental relation are automatically members of their school’s PTA.

PTA General Meetings, usually held on the third Wednesday of every month, are a great way to stay abreast of important PS 11 news including PTA events, DOE initiatives and school-wide programs.  Parents are encouraged to get involved. The Parent Teacher Association has the explicit goals of enriching the experience of all students. If you are interested in reaching out, please leave us a note in the PTA Executive Board Mailbox in PS 11’s Main Office, or email us at pta@ps11bk.org.

School Wellness Council: The School Wellness Council is an advisory group of the School Leadership Team concerned with the health and well-being of students, staff and the school community. The Council helps develop and implement a school-wide health and wellness policy and more. If you are passionate about health and wellness, come join us!

School Tours: We need volunteers on designated tour dates to greet parents, set up tables and distribute brochures, and lead groups of parents for a tour of the school. A group of upper grade student helpers will assist you on the tour.

Fundraising

Grants: Focuses on raising money from foundations, corporations and other donors to support the many enrichment opportunities PS 11 offers it students inside and outside of the classroom. Grant writers and researchers needed.

RAISE 11: PS11’s biggest auction fundraiser is Raise 11, a night of food, drinks and fun bidding on curated items donated by local and bespoke businesses as well as large national retailers and corporations. Volunteers can help procure donations, manage the venue and programs, work with catering or entertainment, and managing the live and silent auctions.

Academic + Cultural Enrichment

Book Bash: PS11 hosts the Book Bash where local children’s book authors and illustrators visit our classrooms to share and discuss their craft. Children can pre-order books featured for the event and have them autographed by the author/illustrator.

Garden: PS11 has a robust garden science program and we need families to help tend to the garden and with fundraising and physical work towards capital improvements.

5th Grade: Assist the administration with organizing trips and activities for the 5th grade, including the DC overnight trip, the college tour trip and the senior 'Friendship Dance.'

Scholars Reception: Organizes the annual reception for PS 11 students who achieve a score of 3 or better on both the state ELA and math exams.

Scholastic Book Fair: Organizes PS 11’s annual week long book fair during the fall to support and embrace literacy and learning. Volunteers help with decorating, set up, sales, stocking of books and helping our little ones make book selections.

School Wellness COUNCIL (SWC)

All New York City public schools are strongly encouraged to establish and/or maintain a School Wellness Council. A School Wellness Council acts as an advisory team to the School Leadership Team and the principal in order to review and support implementation of Citywide wellness policies; assess the wellness of the school environment; create and implement action plans as a part of school-wide wellness initiatives; and/or to support instructional goals in Comprehensive Education Plans. School Wellness Councils should communicate wellness-related policies annually so that all staff, parents, and students are aware of and follow policy guidelines. Final responsibility for School Wellness Council governance and policy implementation rests with the principal. Messages can be left in the SWC Mailbox in PS 11’s Main Office, or via email to schoolwellness@ps11bk.org
