Welcome

Welcome to another fantastic year at PS 11, the Purvis J. Behan School. If this is your first year with us, I am so pleased to have you join us on this incredible journey. When my late grandmother spoke of family and success, she would recite the African proverb-“Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable." I invite each family to "tie their bundles" to ours as we travel through this journey to educate our children.

At PS11, our focus is on educating the whole child and giving them the perspectives and skills to compete as global citizens. Our success comes from having a team of dedicated, energetic and brilliant teachers and staff. Great teachers make us who we are! They collaborate and work tirelessly over the summer and the school year to create an ambitious curriculum that infuses rigorous academic coursework with exceptional experiential STEM and arts programming.

What makes us exceptional and why we are the #1 school in District 13 and a repeat New York State Reward School is how our community of teachers and families come together and collaborate to implement a shared vision. Whether it is working more closely with the PTA, attending School Leadership Team meetings, being a class parent or volunteering in a short-term program, WE NEED YOU! Share your time and talent with us. There is "no stick" too small to add to the strength of our bundle.

Here’s to a fabulous school year! The teachers and I look forward to continuing to work with you as we push to greater heights on behalf of our students.

Enrichment

PS11 strives to develop well rounded children in an environment that is stimulating, diverse, secure, and stable. To meet this end, we have a rich arts program that celebrates and cultivates all students’ individual strengths and interests. Each component of our arts program benefits our students by providing experiential learning, building vocabulary, strengthening problem solving and critical thinking skills, increasing creativity, and boosting confidence. All of these positive aspects add to overall academic achievement and school success. PS11 also offers athletics programs that promote physical health and help the child gain confidence and a sense of self. While some programs are offered grade-wide, others are offered to select students based on assessments of interest and aptitude.

Clement Rand Parent Coordinator

Mr. Clement Rand’s relationship with PS11 goes back to 1995 when his eldest daughter was a kindergarten student. Since then, he has served in volunteer capacities as a tutor, assistant basketball coach, and PTA President (just to name a few), all of this prior to joining PS11 staff as the Parent Coordinator almost 15 years ago. In his everyday, he leverages his experience as an elementary school parent, leader and advocate to foster the community feel PS11 is known for. Mr. Rand is unrivaled in his enthusiasm and fabulous musical taste. If you hear booming music that makes you want to pick up and dance, you can be sure Mr. Rand is not far away.
